A Peek Into My Prayer Journal

I’ve been collecting and penning through journals ever since I can remember.  At eight or nine years old, you could find me taking notes at church, journaling about everyday life, filling a huge pink binder with handwritten stories, and more.  As I’ve gotten older I’ve discarded a few of those old journal themes, but my love for journaling has not diminished.  Now I keep spiritual growth journals, prayer journals, a blogging journal, and others similar to those.

My prayer journals, specifically, are near and dear to my heart.  I think practically everyone should have one!  I’ve often wondered  out of  curiosity though – and maybe you have, too – what exactly do people normally write in their prayer journals?  Well, whether or not it can be classified as “normal,” today I’d like to give you a little peek into my prayer journal.  Because my prayer journal is so special to me, these pictures only show a snippet of what all I write in it, but I hope they will inspire you nonetheless.

Bible verses, to start!  I will occasionally write out Bible verses that I’m pondering, especially if they’re on the topic of prayer.

This is a close up of one page where I’ve written on several things I’m thankful for each day.

At the end of the year, I like to make out a list of some things I’ve learned throughout the year.  Pictured is my list for 2015.  You can read my list for 2016 here.

Sometimes I just like to letter out short prayers, phrases, or song lyrics.

This look familiar? :)  Sometimes I take bits and pieces from blog posts and write them in my journal if they're on a spiritual topic or inspire me to pray (I followed up this specific page with a prayer for contentment).  And sometimes my blog posts are inspired by things I’ve already written!

Other things in my prayer journal include:
  • Personal prayers
  • Prayer requests (these are marked as God answers them)
  • Journal entries with what I am learning or how God is working in my life in an area I prayed about
  • Poem/song lyrics I write
  • Repetitive prayers (such as “A prayer for contentment” or “A prayer when I’m anxious” that I can go back and look over/pray at said time)
  • Quotes
  • Anything that is on my heart

Of course, every prayer journal looks different.  Yours will look different than mine.  Your prayer journal is a visual tool to record and help you pour out your heart to God, so it should be very personal and unique.  There really is no right or wrong way to prayer journal – write down whatever you feel led to!

Do you keep a prayer journal?
What sorts of things do you journal about?

  1. Oh, so cool, I love this! I've been journaling since I could write pretty much and I always used my journals to talk to God :) It's such a neat way to communicate with Him, and I love your journaling ideas! They're so uplifting :) Your lessons from 2015 though when you put "bugs are not death" that made me laugh xDD A very good lesson xD

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed this! I agree, journaling is such a lovely way to "talk" to the Lord and invest in your relationship with Him... especially if you're a writer! :)
Oh yes, I was wondering if anyone would notice that... xD But yes it is SO TRUE and I have to keep reminding myself of that truth often ;) I think its probably one of the hardest things in everyday life we have to learn actually :P We girls can get so ridiculous when it comes to bugs, can't we? xD

    2. Haha, yes, that's really true though! I can get so worked up over bugs because I'm so scared of them xP I mean, my sister broke her collar bone running from one, sooo, she needed to read this and learn that lesson, haha!! XD

Ooh, this was so neat! I don't journal, but this looks really neat! I love how you do yours! And the "bugs are not death" was funny! :D Bugs have evil tendencies though. Hehe! This was a great post, I especially loved the calligraphy quote you did. ;)

  3. I really enjoyed this! I've been trying to think of more things to incorporate into my Bible/Prayer time and prayer journaling is something I've been giving some consideration. At any rate, if I do give it a try, this will be super helpful! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Thank you so much for sharing about your prayer journal, Grace! I keep one too, and it is so wonderful to be able to look back and see the prayers I've prayed, and how God answered. :)

    God bless you this week!

P.S. I found your blog via Christ's Light Magazine. I'm a fellow contributor (Joy at Sisters on Our Knees).

    1. Hi Joy! I'm so glad to have you visiting my blog today! Thank you so much for leaving a comment; I always like to know who is reading and has been blessed by my blog. And thank you as well for specifying which "Joy" you are -- I have another blog reader by that name too ;)
Oh yes I "know" who you are! ;) I've been trying to keep up with Sisters on Our Knees more recently, and I recognize you as a columnist from Christ's Light!
Yes, isn't it wonderful to be able to look back through our prayer journals and see what the Lord has done? I remember those times when I poured my heart out in my journal, and it's amazing to read what I wrote then and see what God has done since!
I hope you have a blessed day, Joy!

    2. Hi, Grace! Yes, it's so wonderful to meet up with other sisters in Christ! :)

There's a series we've started on the blog highlighting prayer warriors (historical or present day). I was wondering if you would be interested participating. :) If not, then no problem, but I wanted to extend the offer since we'd love for you to share about keeping a prayer journal. It would be an interview style blog post with a few questions about keeping a prayer journal, and you can share your thoughts and any encouragement you want to offer to our readers to start a prayer journal. If you're interested, you can email me at sistersonourknees@gmail.com and I'd email you in interview questions.

      God bless! ~ Joy

    3. Thank you so much for asking me to do that, Joy! I am honestly very honored that you'd want to interview me for that. But with everything going on right now in my life, I think it would be best for me to pass. Thank you so very much for offering, though! That was very kind of you to think of me.
